KALABARINABIBI
Kalabarinabibi [ meaning, Kalabari Language ] is a lingual study guide developed by Kalabari Language Forum which is an education - based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the Niger Delta region of Southern Nigeria.
It is a language Institute with the primary aim of preserving and teaching the Kalabari language.
THE KALABARI LANGUAGE AND ITS PEOPLE
The Kalabari language is a dialect spoken by a vibrant Kingdom of people called Kengema Kalabari. They are situated in the Niger Delta Area of Southern Nigeria, specifically Rivers State. The Kalabari Kingdom is blessed with gifted traditional Leaders and Chiefs but the Paramount Ruler always comes from a dynasty of monarchs called "the Amachree Dynasty". The monarchs bear the title,"Amayanabo" which means "King" and reside in Buguma City which is the spiritual home of the Kalabaris and also the seat of the Dynasty.
THEIR OCCUPATION
Traditionally, Kengema Kalabari people are fishermen and traders. However, today, with the coming of western education, Kalabari sons and daughters can be found in virtually all the proffessions - law, medicine, military, engineering, natural sciences, business, politics, government, architecture, etc.
AT HOME AND AT DIASPORA
The Kalabari people are spread over three(3) Local Govrnment Areas of Rivers State viz Asari - Toru, Akuku - Toru and Degema Local Government Areas, living in more than 50
towns, villages and fishing settlements.
A great number of our people are also in the Diaspora, living in the US, Canada, Asia, Europe, etc. This is in addition to the thousands who are resident all over the states of Nigeria.
MOTIVATION BEHIND "KALABARINABIBI"
The two languages used for International Communication are the English and French languages. Of these two, the former seems to be more widely spoken than the latter. As a result of this, the English language has made ( and is still making ) great incursions into the mother - tongues of most indigenous peoples of the world.
Today, among those who use the English language as their lingua franca, it is getting more and more difficult to find people who can express themselves wholly in their language without bringing in one or two sentences in English to complete their statements. This is common among those who had left their homes for the urban centers for the purpose of schooling, bussiness and other forms of employment; it is even more serious for those resident abroad.
With all these in place, it will not be long before most languages will be lost to the English language.
But we here in KLF have decided that our most cherished language must not be lost! We have decided to immortalise the Kalabari language and teach it to our people, especially the children.
We want our people to speak, read and write Kalabari fluently, no matter what other languages they may be exposed to.Please support us!
